William Banks

Director of Operations on Mars — the human face of UAC recruitment across the solar system.

Rank: Director of Operations

Alignment: Union Aerospace Corporation

Fate: Dead (Doom 3)

First appearance: The Solar Railway

Welcome to Mars, Marine.— Director William Banks, welcome message (Doom 3)

William L. Banks (ID 9134-21) was Director of Operations for the UAC Mars Research Facility in Valles Marineris — a high-ranking executive who reported to the Board alongside Dr Betruger. On The Solar Railway his earlier influence on system-wide Mars recruitment becomes clear.

At twenty-three he led startup NanoStruct Aerospace and Defense Systems (2115–2117). Dr Samuel Hayden — then in his nineties — appointed him co-Director of the UAC Research Division on Mars in 2117, beginning a strained partnership with Betruger. Unofficially, Banks was Hayden's man; the 2-to-1 voting split kept real control in Hayden's hands.

By 2141 he is the key figure behind Operation Oversight's massive personnel transfers — referenced in classified dossiers on Operation Oversight. Four years later, in Doom 3, only his PDA entries remain — courteous, measured, and increasingly suspicious.

Minifigure contentThe Human Face of the UAC, Key Figure for tempting Mars job opportunitiesWilliam L. Banks is a minor character in Doom 3. He's a top executive, one of the 3 leaders of the UAC Research Facility on Mars. He's the Director of Operations. Officially, it's the top of the hierarchy & he reports directly to the Board, like Dr Betruger. Unofficially (though well known), he is Samuel Hayden's man. Hayden appointed him Co-Director in 2117 alongside Betruger. Due to the 2-to-1 voting split, the real control of the Research Facility (and the whole UAC Mars) is actually in Hayden's hands. Rumours say UAC's staff shortages since 2135 (teleportation test began), but it started in '27, after Argent Tower's completion. This worsened by Delta Complex's expansion ('35) & the new Exis Labs ('41). Banks is key figure in system-wide Mars recruitment.

Background

In Doom 3, Banks worked in Office 131 in the Administration Complex. In the month before the invasion he grew worried about missing personnel and power-grid failures, suspecting Betruger but unable to act because Betruger outranked him.

He was killed during the demon invasion. His body and PDA lie in Betruger's office next to a Satanic pentagram; acquiring his PDA triggers the first enemy teleport and grants access to Alpha Labs.

The Mercury Rising portrayal expands his pre-Mars career — it is fan fiction, not official lore.

Trivia

  • His welcome message greets every Marine who acquires a PDA at the start of Doom 3.
  • Audio logs document power-grid complaints and missing-personnel reports dated October 2145.
  • A faint “Save me...” whisper in Betruger's office may or may not be Banks.
