S. Holmes
A minor character in Doom 3 — a Marine stationed at Marine Command in Mars City, armed with a standard issue Machine Gun.
Rank: Marine
Alignment: Friendly
Fate: Dead
First appearance: Mars City
You need to report to Sergeant Kelly ASAP. He's in Command HQ.— S. Holmes, upon meeting the Marine (Doom 3)
Doom 3
When the player meets Holmes, he points the direction to Command HQ, where Sergeant Kelly is waiting for them. If the player persists in speaking to him, he will warn them of the consequences they will face from Sarge.
Shortly after the demonic invasion begins, Holmes maintains his position where he was last seen. When the player returns to Marine HQ, they witness him getting strangled to death by a Zombie.
Doom: Mercury Rising
In the timeline of the Doom: Mercury Rising campaign (set in 2141, four years before Doom 3), S. Holmes — first name Steve — is preparing to leave military service on Mercury. After six years with Northern Military Command and a posting tied to Thakur Cross Service Station, he spends two days on the Northern Railway on private business: he has accepted a security coordinator role with the Rip & Tear music retail chain on East Side.
The campaign frames Holmes as a likeable Marine who expects a quieter private-sector life — low risk, better pay, and Christmas leave on Earth in New Jersey with his family and dog, Benny. He does not yet know that his plans will unravel. His story on UAC off-world postings resumes in spring 2144, setting him on the path that places him under Sergeant Kelly at Mars City Marine Command in 2145.
His personal PDA entry expands on the transfer:
Mars City Marine in '45 — leaving Thakur for the Northern Railway in '41 (Excerpt)“...In 2141 he's already spent 2 days on the Northern Railway on business: quitting Thakur to try the private sector. New job: security coordinator at the Rip & Tear music chain on East Side — low risk, good pay...”
Additional details regarding Holmes' Mercury career — and the full DATAPAD text — are documented within the UAC Personnel page.
Trivia
- His name refers to Steve Holmes, Activision production coordinator for Doom 3.
- His helmet can be seen on the floor between the HQ and the Infirmary.
- Holmes's death is scripted — stepping into the hallway triggers a Zombie to appear and strangle him. Using
nocliplets you enter the hallway without triggering the Zombie, but even after turning it off you can walk through him as though he were a ghost, and clicking him does nothing. - His dialogue changes after you meet Sergeant Kelly.
- In Mars City, if you use cheats to kill him before meeting Sergeant Kelly, he respawns after the cutscene upon returning through the area — the game deletes him on a trigger and spawns another copy with different dialogue.
- In Doom: Mercury Rising lore, Holmes intends to leave Thakur for Rip & Tear security work and a Jersey Christmas before UAC off-world duty resumes in spring 2144 — leading to his later Doom 3 posting.
