S. Holmes
Marine Steve Holmes — leaving Thakur for Rip & Tear security and a Jersey Christmas before Mars City in 2145.
You need to report to Sergeant Kelly ASAP. He's in Command HQ.— S. Holmes, upon meeting the Marine (Doom 3)
In 2141 — four years before Doom 3 — S. Holmes (first name Steve) is preparing to leave military service on Mercury. After six years with Northern Military Command and a posting tied to Thakur Cross Service Station, he spends two days on the Northern Railway on private business.
He has accepted a security coordinator role with the Rip & Tear music retail chain on East Side — low risk, better pay, and a planned Christmas in New Jersey with his family and dog, Benny. He does not yet know his plans will unravel.
UAC off-world duty resumes in spring 2144, placing him under Sergeant Kelly at Mars City Marine Command in 2145 — where the player meets him before a Zombie strangles him during the invasion.

Mars City Marine in '45 — leaving Thakur for the Northern Railway in '41In 2145 we glimpse S. (Steve) Holmes again: a Marine at Mars City Marine Command, under Sgt. Kelly's orders. In Doom 3 he holds a security post at Command HQ's entrance — still alive, still fit for duty when the invasion hits. In 2141 he's already spent 2 days on the Northern Railway on business: quitting Thakur to try the private sector. New job: security coordinator at the Rip & Tear music chain on East Side — low risk, good pay, less equatorial quiet. With Northern HQ pay & his 6-year service bonus he heads to Earth: New Jersey, family, and dog Benny for Christmas. UAC off-world duty resumes spring 2144. A 21st-c. Steve Holmes was Activision's Doom 3 prod. coordinator. Pure coincidence.
Background
When the player meets Holmes in Doom 3, he points toward Command HQ where Sergeant Kelly waits. If the player persists, he warns of consequences from Sarge.
Shortly after the demonic invasion begins, Holmes maintains his position until the player returns to Marine HQ and witnesses him strangled by a Zombie.
His name refers to Steve Holmes, Activision production coordinator for Doom 3. The Mercury backstory is fan fiction.
